At Kennington Academy we aim to promote healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage all our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through school councils, fundraising events, supporting nominated charities and involvement in community activities. Our pupils are given opportunities in PSHE lessons and assemblies to develop confidence, self-motivation and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society.
We teach PSHE in a variety of ways: as a discrete subject, through Jigsaw lessons, via assemblies and through other subjects such as RE, History, Geography, Literacy, Maths and Science, as well as through outdoor educational visits, community work and activities.
We encourage our children to eat healthily and exercise regularly by making the right choices. The children learn all about the importance of a healthy and safe lifestyle in their structured ‘Healthy Me’ lessons in tern 4 and also during our annual Well Being week. We focus a lot on children’s mental health and ensure children have many opportunities to carry out mindfulness activities, both in ‘calm me time’ in PSHE lessons, as well as various points in the day when needed. Each class has a mindfulness pack with ideas for the teachers and pupils to use. They also have a worry box where children can write down something that is worrying them and then speak to an adult if appropriate. The children also learn lots of coping strategies in their PSHE lessons and learn how to look after their mental health during Children’s Mental Health week in February.
During term 6, each year group engages in RSE lessons, this is a progressive scheme of work which covers areas such as the differences between males and females, puberty and pregnancy. Parents are informed before the lessons are taught and if they have any concerns they are encouraged to come in and discuss the content of the lessons with the class teacher.
British Values at Kennington Academy
At Kennington Academy we uphold and teach pupils about British Values which are defined as:
democracy
rule of law
individual liberty
mutual respect
tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
These values are taught through Personal, Social, Health and Emotional (PSHE), and Religious Education (RE). We also teach British Values through planning and delivering a broad and balanced curriculum.
The school takes opportunities to actively promote British Values through daily collective worship and whole school systems and structures such as electing and running a successful School Council.
We also actively promote British values through ensuring that our curriculum planning and delivery includes real opportunities for exploring these values.
